Unraveling the Story of Roro Jonggrang

The story of Roro Jonggrang begins in the past, at the time of the ancient Javanese kingdom which revived this legend. In this region, two kingdoms competed against each other: the Pengging Kingdom and the Boko Kingdom. The Pengging Kingdom led by Prabu Damar Moyo, and the Boko Kingdom ruled by an evil king, Raja Boko.

King Boko had the desire to build his palace on a hill, which eventually became the site for the Boko Temple. However, to build his luxurious palace, he must rely on the help of supernatural spirits. This is when he joined Bandung Bondowoso, a powerful shaman.

Meanwhile, in the Pengging Kingdom, lived Roro Jonggrang, a beautiful and intelligent princess. His father, Prabu Baka, fought against Raja Boko in a fierce battle. Prabu Baka died in the battle and the Pengging Kingdom had to accept defeat. Roro Jonggrang was very saddened by his father’s passing and vowed to take revenge.

Roro Jonggrang’s quest for revenge led her to Raja Boko, where she finally met Bandung Bondowoso. Even though at first the two of them didn’t like each other, over time, Bandung Bondowoso fell in love with Roro Jonggrang. He submitted a request to marry Roro Jonggrang, but his request was rejected by the princess because his determination was still tied to his grudge against King Boko.

But Bandung Bondowoso did not give up. By using his supernatural powers, he changes his appearance into a frightening and terrible figure. With that power, he tried to force Roro Jonggrang to marry him. However, Roro Jonggrang had her own plans.

To stop Bandung Bondowoso’s efforts, Roro Jonggrang gave Bandung Bondowoso impossible conditions. He asked Bandung Bondowoso to build a thousand temples in one night, before the cock crows for the first time. Bandung Bondowoso, who has supernatural powers, accepts the challenge without hesitation.

With the help of supernatural spirits, Bandung Bondowoso set to work building the temples requested by Roro Jonggrang. However, when he almost finished his task, Roro Jonggrang started to feel anxious. He didn’t want Bandung Bondowoso to succeed because he was afraid of having to keep his promise. So by trickery, Roro Jonggrang ordered her servants to use kitchen tools and light a fire to imitate the sound of a rooster crowing, before the proper time.

The night was getting late and Bandung Bondowoso was getting closer to completing his task. However, seeing the light of daybreak, the helping spirits who were helping Bandung Bondowoso panicked and ran away. Without the help of the supernatural, Bandung Bondowoso lost his strength and could not complete his task.

Finding Roro Jonggrang’s cunning mind, Bandung Bondowoso was angry but also impressed by the daughter’s ingenuity. As punishment, he cursed Roro Jonggrang, turning her into a temple statue. The temples he had built were turned into statues, and in this story, the Prambanan Temple is the eternal form of the figure of Roro Jonggrang who was trapped in a  curse.
